Feel at home in London
Dave Charles, Ballito Life & Style, April 08
“When a man is tired of London, he is tired
of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."
—
Samuel Johnson 1777
It’s a quote trotted out often by those extolling
the virtues of a trip to London in these economically trying times
and I dare say
that London was an expensive place to visit in 1777. It hasn’t
changed much – the cost factor, that is – but the sentiment
of Johnson’s quote still rings true. There is certainly a world
within a world to be explored in this multifaceted city. South Africans
visiting London will no doubt be looking at how to get the best value
from an awfully weak rand without ruining the trip by staying in
depressing surroundings. Having recently returned from just such
a trip, I can
offer you a little advice on the subject.
One of the best kept secrets that I can share with
you is the details of a charming residence in the heart of Kensington – a
very plush address at surprisingly reasonable rates – it’s
not cheap, but it’s well worth paying a little extra to stay
here if your budget allows. The décor is elegant, the apartments
are fully serviced and the facilities include everything you need to
make your
stay as comfortable as you would be at home.
You are superbly located here in a quiet, tree-lined,
garden-square just one minute away from Kensington Palace Gardens,
great shopping,
restaurants and bus stops to Knightsbridge, Piccadilly, Oxford
Street and the West End theatres. It’s a short three to
five minute walk to Kensington Palace, the Princess Dianna Memorial
Fountain, and
shops, Marks & Spencer and Whole Foods Market, Gap, LK Bennett,
Warehouse, Monsoon, Jigsaw, Hennes, Zara, Diesel, Next, Top Shop,
Urban Outfitters – are you packing yet?
A few minutes walk in the opposite direction takes you into the
village atmosphere of Kensington with its beautiful houses in
leafy streets
and squares, quirky shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs.
The majority of guests are repeat bookings or recommendations
from previous guests which speaks volumes. Samuel Johnson would
have
loved it – we certainly did!
